In 1872, Best and Company was the second-largest brewery in the U.S. One of its brands, Best Select, picked up awards at beer competitions throughout the 1880s, so, in 1882, Pabst and his team added pieces of blue ribbons to dress up the Best Select bottles.

Unfortunately the Edcor RMX1 is not $23 anymore try $31 + shipping on top of that which even if you are in the USA will be at least another $10 cause they send everything by courier so your looking at $41 or more for the Edcor RMX1. There are cheaper transformer alternatives to be had like the ones here:

Thanks for posting this! I was inspired to install two RMX-1 in my R40 pair. The cost is now $32 per transformer with a hefty $15 shipping fee. Totally worth it though. Especially considering comparable US transformers are in the $100 range. The wiring guide was helpful in this post. I actually removed all the old wires in mine and just wired the transformer directly to the ribbon motor and XLR connector. Less wire. I am in love with these microphones! You can here some sound demonstrations I posted here -much-gear-so-little-time/597135-mxl-r40-ribbon-microphone-4.html

I put the edcore in this weekend. Easy mod. Two tips, you unscrew the bottom of the mic to get inside and note that the body of the mic is keyed at the top to the part with the ribbon in it. That ensures that the front of the ribbon lines up with the lettering on the body.

Hmmm, not a bad idea! The basic problem of ribbon mics is low output voltage, and using a transformer to amplify the voltage to compensate causes problems that an active device will solve. To back up my point, there are now ribbon mics that use 48V phantom power. They eliminate the problem of high output impedance on the secondary by buffering the transformer INSIDE the mic instead of outside in a separate box like I do, but the theory is EXACTLY the same: put a buffer between the output transformer and the mic pre-amp.

Just as a note for anyone else doing this, it may be worth your time to take the head basket off and look at the ribbon itself; my was loose and sagging, sagging as far as being almost out of the magnets at the deepest part of the sag.

I was able to re-tension the ribbon by loosening the top clamp piece and pulling on a bit of the tab that was left by the manufacture. You just need to tighten it enough to remove the sag, but NOT pull the pleats out of the ribbon material. A

Incidentally I also tried removing the protective mesh screens (no significant change to frequency response) and retensioning the ribbon (mine was a bit saggy, and this increased sensitivity about 1.5 dB).

Blue Ribbon Eel is blue with yellow fins. Ribbon eels make striking display animals for the home aquarium; however, in some captive venues they will refuse to feed. In most cases they will need live feeder fish to survive, but some can be trained to take small pieces of fish impaled on the sharpened end of a piece of rigid airline tubing or to take food off the aquarium bottom. Provide with plenty of hiding places and sand on the bottom of the tank. A cave or pile of rubble may be used as a shelter site. This species does best if kept in a specimen tank (on its own). The ribbon eel is an elegant creature with a long, thin body and high dorsal fins. Many feel that it resembles a brightly colored party streamer. The ribbon eel can easily be recognised by its expanded anterior nostrils. Juveniles and sub-adults are jet black with a yellow dorsal fin, while females are yellow with a black anal fin with white margins on the fins. The adult male can be black, fluorescent blue with yellow highlights, blue-green, or brilliant yellow.Like many eels, the ribbon eel is sometimes thought to be angry or aggressive, because its mouth is often open, appearing ready to strike. In reality, the eel is simply breathing. In the wild, the ribbon eel buries itself in sand or hides in rocks or reefs, dashing out to feed on small fishes. The ribbon eel is known as one of the most sociable and peaceful of all moray eels, and does not bother humans or get easily irritated.
